Really nothing special, but exactly what you need for a side pocket on your backpack. The zipper is covered for extra water repellency and protection against wear and dirt. The vertical webbings on the front keep the compression straps of your backpack neatly in place over the pouch, so that they can also compress the pouch well. These can also be used as attachment points for bungee cords, carabiners, and things like that.
A 25 mm webbing loop and D-ring on the top of the rear inner wall make it possible to secure small and important items, the flat rear compartment provides rudimentary organization for smaller items. The bottom and the lower half of the sides are lined with 210D polyamide for extra wear resistance. A through-through opening allows for the drainage of water that could seep into the bag.
The back is equipped with our standard PALS fastening web belt system with folding tabs. The middle horizontal rows were omitted because they didn't really do anything other than add weight. We are not a manufacturer of ultra-light stuff, but even we do not like unnecessary weight.
The two vertical fastening straps leave an approx. 9 cm wide gap, so you can carry items such as axes, fishing sticks, etc. behind the pouch.
Optimal attachment requires a width of four channels and a height of six (min. five) rows of PALS webbing. The compression straps on the side of the backpack, when put on, will prevent any movement of the backpack and its contents.
Of our own packs, we recommend the 12L side bag only for the Jääkäri XL. While this is not recommended, you can also make the bag suitable for smaller bags with an absolute minimum of six rows of PALS webbing on the sides, by attaching the bag a step higher and accepting that the bottom becomes a little limp.
Examples of use
With a capacity of twelve liters, this is a very large side bag, the PALS attachment is five channels wide. Best used on large and high backpacks of 70-100+ liters. Here are some examples of what will fit in such a bag:
- A tarp, hammock, duvet and accessories.
- A lightweight puff coat, pants and rainwear
- A Trangia 27 series stove, fuel, water and lots of stuff to cook.
- A Jetboil cooker, a few gas cartridges, water and lots of cooking utensils.
- A few days of rations and snacks
- A week of spare underwear, intermediate layers and socks.
- All kinds of big special stuff that you need to take with you.
