Overview
"Kantamus" is Finnish for "a carried burden," usually something heavier that you carry with you. The Kantamus is an all-round backpack for general use, suitable for various purposes. Scalability and compression allow you to adapt the backpack to changing situations and needs, while the internal aluminum frame provides sturdy support and weight shifting.
With a main compartment of approx. 40 litres, plus 8 litres in the lid, the Kantamus 40L can fit sleeping systems, spare clothes, food and water for a few days. Thanks to the many external attachment points for bags and additional equipment, you can adapt it to your needs.
Main Compartment
The main compartment is accessible from the top via a roll closure and via a vertical zipper on the right side. Inside there is a compartment for the hydration bladder, with two attachment loops and a hydration bladder attachment tab at the top. Each side of the backpack has a tube port.
The side zipper on the left leads to a large, flat pocket on the front of the backpack. Suitable for items such as tarpaulins and other flat items.
The sides and front feature spacious PALS webbing for attaching additional pockets and gear. The bottom has two rows of PALS webbing straps for attaching items with packing straps or elastic cord.
Two side compression straps with SR buckles on either side of the pack provide both compression and a way to carry long, bulky tools and gear or quickly attach additional loads, such as a Hatka 12L daypack with suitable buckles.
The slightly curved side pockets allow you to carry long tools and the like on the sides. These are relatively flat and low, not intended for carrying water bottles and the like, for that we recommend adding a GP pocket to the hip belt.
Floating lid
The lid has a large main compartment, capacity approx. 8 liters, accessible via a zipper on the neck side. When the lid is filled, it "balloons" up, and when it's empty, it lies flat and tight. Ideal for rainwear, puffy coats etc. When the lid is pressed shut, the contents stay firmly in place. The top of the lid has an elastic cord to hold light items. The bottom of the lid has two rows of PALS webbing, suitable for attaching a sleeping pad or other equipment.
The front of the flap has a small zippered pocket and a D-ring loop on the inside, good for small trinkets and valuables.
Pro-tip: The lid can also be removed and replaced with, for example, our Askare hip bag or a Hatka 12L with suitable buckles (not included with the backpack). For example, you can turn the Kantamus into a modular carrying system.
Carrying system
An internal tubular aluminum frame gives the Kantamus sturdiness and good weight transfer to the hips. The back is padded with a thick and rigid closed-cell foam cushion placed in a compartment with Velcro fastener. The pad can be removed for use as a sitting/kneeling cushion and the compartment can be used to carry other equipment, for example a tarp or poncho.
The padded shoulder straps are attached to steel rings, allowing them to move slightly. The loadlifters can be threaded through two webbing loops to adjust the point where they exit the shoulder straps, so they can be adjusted to the user's height and preference. The chest strap is removable and can be slid over the shoulder straps as desired.
The hip belt consists of two sewn-on pieces of 50 mm webbing with PALS channels. The rest of the hip belt (three pads and the front straps) is attached to this. Any part of the belt can be removed and replaced without sewing if necessary. The belt closes with a super secure Mountain buckle, very easy to use even with thick cold weather gloves on.
Robust and repairable
The main body of the backpack is made of 1000D Cordura for high abrasion resistance, while details such as the back pocket and roll top are made of lighter and less coarse 500D. The zippers are covered and have two pullers, so you always have a backup in case one puller fails.
The buckles, flap, shoulder straps and hipbelt parts can be easily removed and replaced in the event of damage, without the need for sewing or special tools, making repairs easy for the life of the backpack.
