“Kahakka” is Finnish for “small fight” or “skirmish,” quite apt for what is literally a small battle package. The “special” thing about the Kahakkas is that they are actually not special at all. These are serious packs for the 99% of users who need a simple all-round combat/daypack with enough scalability and versatility for different tasks and changing situations. The Kahakka packs are made for the realities of military use. We have over half a century of experience in making gear for the Finnish Defense Force, who prefer their gear to last a decade or more with heavy use. The Kahakkas are indeed robust, but we didn’t sacrifice functionality or tone down the design for the sake of durability. What we have here is a peculiar blend of functionality, comfort and traditional Savotta robustness. The Kahakka 15L has a total capacity, including side pockets, of approx. 20 litres plus numerous attachment options for additional equipment on the outside. The Kahakka 15L is a very compact backpack, with enough capacity for essential personal and mission/task related equipment, including rain gear etc. Details & Features The foldable top of the main compartment is quick and easy to open and close with two SR buckles. Fast as a zipper, but super reliable with long-term use in mud, sand and snow. Inside, there is a compartment for a drinking bladder/radio, with two attachment loops and a hydration bladder attachment tab at the top. Each side of the backpack has an antenna/cable/conduit port. The pleated, expandable side pockets provide quick access to gear such as water bottles, E-tools, bolt cutters etc. Each pouch has a capacity of approx. 2.5 litres, filled in such a way that the compression strap at the top closes the pouch. When the pouches are empty, they lie neatly flat. Vertical webbing loops keep the lateral compression straps neatly in place. The bags have water drainage holes at the bottom. Two side compression straps with steel G-hooks on either side of the backpack provide both compression and a way to quickly attach gear to the outside of the backpack. The G-hooks also allow you to attach additional pockets to the back of the backpack. The Kahakka 15L has one external zippered pocket, a flat pocket on the front of the backpack with a D-ring loop on the inside, good for small trinkets and valuables. The zipper has two pullers with spacious cord loops to make them quiet and the zipper easier to use with thick gloves on. With PALS webbing on the front and bottom, extra items can be attached with elastic cord or packing straps. Loops above the side pockets can be used to fasten items with cord, carabiners or packing straps. The back is padded and supported by a thick and rigid closed-cell foam pad, placed in an open pocket on the outside of the backpack. The pad can be quickly removed and replaced, you can use it as a sitting/kneeling pad or use the compartment to carry other equipment, for example a tarp or poncho. The padded, contoured shoulder straps attach to steel D-rings. The D-rings allow the shoulder straps to rotate and adapt to different body shapes. The shoulder straps can be removed and replaced as needed. The sternum strap is removable and can be moved up and down along the shoulder straps as desired. Robust and repairable The main body of the backpack is made of 1000D Cordura for high abrasion resistance, while details such as the compartment for the backpack and the folded tops are made of lighter and less bulky 500D. The zippers are covered and have two pullers, so you’ll always have a backup in case one puller fails. The shoulder straps are easy to replace if damaged, and the bottom straps can be replaced with 25mm webbing if needed. All plastic buckles can be removed and replaced without sewing. The compression straps on the sides use steel G-hooks, which will not give out and provide the ability to quickly hook additional gear to the back of the backpack. Kahakka 15L vs 25L, which one should I choose? First of all, we are not the experts in what you need, that’s you. The big difference between these two is of course the size, the 25L is significantly larger than the 15L and also has a strap and an extra pouch on top of the lid. If you often have to carry bulky winter clothes on top of your other essentials, as we do here in Finland: take the 25L. If you want a sleek, compact backpack and don’t need that extra 10 litres of space: get the 15L. Either way, both backpacks offer a lot of options to add extra gear on the outside and good compression straps to tighten the backpack when it’s half full.
